ViVI Score: Mobile App

UX/UI for the ViVI Mobile App and web portal

Project for Radolo, November 2017

overview

The ViVI Disease Severity Score is a clinical score determined from a 22-question survey used to calculate and monitor the severity of influenza cases.

I designed the ViVI App, HIPPA-compliant mobile app physicians use to assess disease severity at the point-of-care, as well as the web portal epidemiologists use to manage ViVI Score data.

THE TEAM

I worked with a software engineer who developed the backend for the project. An independent graphic designer created the avatars for the app.

Aesthetic

This application is used most frequently by pediatricians so I wanted to make the design professional, fun, legible and friendly. I took variations of the color palates from the illustrated Avatars, and used a different Avatar on each page to break up the monotony of the survey.

ChallengE

Physicians need to administer the survey quickly and accurately and stay focused in a distracting environment.

Solution: Large, strategically placed buttons

The app is designed to be as simple, consistent and responsive as possible.

The buttons are located on the bottom of the screen, easily accessible by the thumb without moving the hand.

I made the buttons substantially larger than average in order to allow healthcare providers to input survey answers quickly while shifting their attention and visual focus between device and patient.

Solution: Button orientation

Yes/no buttons are oriented horizontally while multiple choice buttons are oriented vertically. This allows users to distinguish question types at a glance. This is especially useful because the majority of questions are yes/no and users tend to fly through these sections. A distinct orientation for multiple choice questions signals the user to slow down and read the options so they don’t accidentally answer the question as if it were yes/no.

Challenge

Due to HIPPA and data-integrity requirements, healthcare providers are prevented from backtracking through the survey questions.

challenge Details

This was one of the most interesting design challenges of the app. They needed to administer the survey as quickly and as accurately as possible, without backtracking.

The two concerns with backtracking were that a) someone could pick up a device and be able to backtrack see sensitive health data and b) physicians may be tempted to change earlier answers based on how they answered later answers or administer the survey out of order, which would damage the integrity of the ViVI Score.

solution

The first option was to use confirmation dialogs. While it solved for accuracy and prevented backtracking, it was far from ideal since it added substantial time to the survey flow. Confirmation dialogs doubled the number of clicks.

The second option was to only allow the user to backtrack one question. That way, users wouldn’t need to confirm each response, but if they realize they’ve made a mistake they can fix it. This solution was approved vis-a-vis HIPPA and data integrity and implemented.

This mobile application allows healthcare professionals to assess patients quickly, at the point of care. Following simple yes/no questions, the app will automatically calculate two scores that may assist in patient management: the ViVI Disease Severity Score and the ViVI Risk Factor Score. This clinical decision support software helps doctors to take medical decisions quickly and to communicate consistently with patients and colleagues, using a “shared language” based on scientific evidence.

“The ViVI Score Mobile App can be used to score disease severity and risk in patients with influenza-like infections including infants and children. It is specifically designed to improve workflow and quality of care — to the benefit of patients and their families. To this end, it was developed based on the principles of Design Thinking. The ViVI score mobile app can be used in anonymous, HIPAA cleared expedited mode, or in follow-up mode during IRB-approved clinical trials or observational studies. It can also be used to link standardized disease severity data to laboratory results.”
